Yahoo loves Flex
Well, I gotta say Yahoo is really embracing Flash and Flex - there’s a really good API detailing the new AS3 Maps API for embedding Yahoo maps within a Flex or Flash interface — a neat little example is here. Yahoo already has some examples, screencasts and other fun bits. And to think, I was just visiting Yahoo to grab their latest Flash and Flex components.

iPhone Live and ScreenFlow
I finally got akaRemote installed and launching properly on my iPhone (copy to the iPhone via AFP, then chmod -R 777 *), and, using artificialeyes.tv on my MacBookPro as translation to Ableton Live, I threw together this little screencast:
This is also using the fantastically new ScreenFlow which allows you to have two video sources at the same time: you’re desktop AND your iSight as input. ScreenFlow also keeps each video source seperate so you can edit it AFTER you’ve recorded — here I scaled up the iSight track, used a shadow, and added the Apple-influenced reflection on it. Guess you could say this post is a two-fer. I intend to write up a separate post about ScreenFlow, and am going to play more with akaRemote and Live. I fooled around slightly with the accelerometer sending midi control, but it was a bit iffy. I hope that soon my hippie dance will influence the music, just as the music causes me to hippie dance.

In Rainbows….
CurrentTV has a full hour long video of Radiohead performing ‘In Rainbows’. Just goes to show how well open source music is being embraced…. I’d certainly pay to see a band that I’ve gotten to see for free

Truth and Beauty…
I just finished watching this presentation by medical illustrator and animator David Bolinsky — posted first on the TED site back in July, and lately refreshed on motionographer — and thought it was worthwhile pushing it here.

DIY: Make Your Own Open Source Video Mixer
There’s a number of programming languages that allow you to manipulate video - high end applications like Max/MSP/Jitter, or open source languages like Processing are common examples of these languages. Lately there’s been a bit of a new kid on the scene called PureData - or Pd - which seems to be Max’s open source younger brother, as it’s created by the same father.
Beau, aka DJCypod created a great video tutorial on building a simple 2-way mixer in Pd, which you can see here:

ActionSnip
Now from the heavy hitters at Vixiom, comes the website ActionSnip which allows you to save your AS online:
I know yes another snippet site, but none of the others highlight ActionScript properly. And because I don’t only collect snippets but blog posts about ActionScript as well there’s a feature called scraps which lets you save useful posts along side your snippets.
Other features include saving favorite snippets/scraps that others have posted, and a ’steal this code’ link which gives you highlighted code to embed in your blog just like the example below (here’s the original on ActionSnip)
What’s nice is that someone already uploaded an AS3 library for Facebook.
See how work gets done for you?

Political bloodshed…
The race for the Presidency can be brutal; but not as brutal as Kung Fu Election!
Though I’d certainly have more respect for a President that has gone the way of Mad Max.

The Perfect Girl
It seems there’s something new happening in motion graphics classes - the idea of ‘intonation excercises’; that’s where, using only text/typography and a spoken audio track, the video artist will try to visually express the emotion/thought/intonation behind the dialogue.
This is a great example created by Brian Cane to Vince Vaughn’s monologue of ‘The Perfect Girl’ in Wedding Crashers:
There’s other examples at Motionographer.

WiiRemote Head Tracking
Ok - so the neighborhood parents are very jealous that we were able to pick up a Wii (thanks Michael!), but at first my daughter was not impressed at all. It took some heavy prompting and demoing by dear old dad before she was even interested — and I put myself in the line of fire to play with this thing.
Even now my arm is extremely sour. I’ve been pitching fastballs like I’ve got my hands on my…nevermind.
But this video really blows me away:
Watch the illusion that the ‘closer’ circles are floating above the laptop; it’s extremely insane.
